Language Arts Programme

About the Lower Secondary Language Arts Programme (LAP):

The Language Arts Programme (LAP) is a school-based curriculum innovation
created for Secondary One and Two Express and Normal (Academic) students.

It was designed to incorporate authentic learning platforms and focus on hands-on
discovery learning and real life application of the English Language. It infuses other
subjects such as Literature and History in the teaching the English Language.

Rationale for LAP

In HSS, about half of the students come from non-English speaking families. They did
not do well for English in the PSLE, thus they lack the confidence to use the language.

Some have accepted failure as a matter of fact. Others perceive English as merely a
subject they need to pass to move on. Their diffidence, fear of making mistakes and
failure, as well as boring mechanical teacher-centered English lessons, discourage them
from seeing the real importance of learning English.

As English is a very important tool for communication and the mastery of other
knowledge, the LAP aims to address the areas for improvement by providing:

1 ) a more holistic learning experience based on real-life situations

2 ) opportunities for hands-on activities to nurture students to be confident users of
the language

3 ) platforms for oral communication and collaborative learning
